Bondora Superstars #4 — Avishek Tarun
👨💼Bondorian since: 2019
💻Role: Data Scientist
🚀Team: Marketing Analytics
Data, puns, and more data
As you can see from his picture and the caption, Avishek Tarun (Avi for short) loves having a good laugh and coming up with funny puns. You might not expect such humor from a data scientist, but that’s what makes Avi so unique. He’s not called the PUN-isher for no reason 😉 Despite working with numbers all day, he loves spending time with people, cracking jokes, and working with others to get the job done.
He started at Bondora in February 2019 and has been a part of the Marketing Analytics team to ensure we enhance our offerings to provide the best service to our customers:
“I work with data. A lot of it. And everything around it, which includes talking to various teams to understand what they need, writing SQL queries, doing analyses, summarizing findings, and communicating with stakeholders to make sure they have what they need.”
The most rewarding part of Avi’s job is seeing his analyses make tangible differences in customers’ experience:
“Ooohhh, the power of data! I love providing actionable data-based insights and working closely with teams to improve our user acquisition and products. It’s great to see how my work is being used to make things even better. I am a people person, so I love that my work requires me to annoy (I mean, coordinate with) different teams who have varied skills. 😉 It’s the perfect match for someone like me who is a people and data person.”
📚 Avi’s must-read book:
“Factfulness: Ten Reasons We’re Wrong About the World – and Why Things Are Better Than You Think” by Hans Rosling.
Don’t put your eggs in one basket
Avi has been in the investing arena for about four years now. In 2016 he invested in some crypto and had since included Bondora Go & Grow investments in his portfolio. He plans on investing more into Go & Grow and wants to buy non-Baltic stocks in Estonia that don’t cost an arm and a leg. Diversification is vital!
And speaking of diversification. It’s also one of Avi’s top 3 pieces of investment advice he’s ever gotten:
“Don’t invest more than you can afford to lose, don’t put all your eggs in one basket, and leverage the power of compound interest.”
Wise words: “By kind to others and yourself, be happy, keep improving your skills, and get out of your comfort zone.”
Let’s get personal
What’s your spirit animal?
Lemurs. Not only because they are super smart, cool, and useful, but also because they settle their disputes with stink battles. 💣 I’ve traveled to Madagascar to see how cool they are in their natural habitat, and they did not disappoint.
What’s your favorite food?
Biryani! It’s the most aromatic dish in the world. Fight me if you disagree. Sadly, I can’t find a legit biryani in Tallinn, but luckily, I cook a decent one… 😋
How do you feel about pineapple on pizza?
Well, it’s like asking if people should be allowed to eat well-done steaks. Sure, you can do it, but know that I will silently judge you.
And what food do you refuse to eat?
Hmm, that’s a tough one. I like anything as long as it’s prepared well, but if I had to choose, I’d love never to eat Ketchup again.
And there you have it! Avi, our in-house PUN-isher, is proof that you can love numbers and people. Check back next month for our 5th Bondora Superstar! ⭐️
